How many of you can relate to the feeling of never truly looking in the mirror and being able to say "I'm Beautiful"?
I have so many amazing women who book their Boudoir Sessions and are completely up front with the fact that they don't like anything they see when they look in the mirror. Either they have lived most of their lives fighting with their body image, or they've had life changes (becoming a mom, medical issues, stress, illness, etc.) that have changed their bodies and left them feeling unhappy with the women that they are. This 100% always hurts my heart...but it also makes me more determined to show them (and as many other women as I can) that they truly are beautiful.
"Ms. E" booked her Boudoir Session and before she even had a chance to get to the studio, she called me and let me know that she was on the fence. She was ready to cancel her Session. The little voices inside of her head telling her that she wasn't "enough" or that she wasn't "beautiful" were so loud that she wasn't even sure she could go through with her Session. Of course, this is exactly the reason why going through with her Session was so important. I knew that I could show her how beautiful she was. I knew that I could help her feel more alive and confident in her body, but she didn't know that...yet.
We aren't born with body image issues, Ladies, these things are 100% learned, and they are being taught earlier and earlier. Young girls around the world are bullying themselves because they don't feel like they measure up to their friends, the women they see in magazines or online, and these girls turn into women who live a constant struggle. It's time for a change.
This is "Ms. E"...and by all accounts, she is a gorgeous, fit and beautiful woman. Most would look at her and think she's a model or at the very least a woman who has all the confidence in the world. But just like so many of us, she has fallen victim to the pain of body image issues. Even after she had her amazing hair and makeup done, and we had the BEST time during her Session (chatting and laughing like old friends) she admitted that while she was waiting to see her photographs, she told herself that she would be happy if she liked ONE PHOTO.
Needless to say, the incredible "Ms. E" liked far more than ONE PHOTO - I think our original total was over 50 images that she absolutley loved! And Ladies, this was at her "Reveal and Ordering Session" about 30 minutes after her Photography Session before any of her images had even gone through "Final Editing". This is exactly why I feel so strongly in the way that I handle my Boudoir Sessions, because allowing a client to see her photographs (and just how AMAZING) that she truly looks before she even leaves the studio is pure gold when it comes to building confidence, empowerment and taking that first step toward body positivity.
Of course all of my imagery goes through a full editing process, but there is nothing like showing my clients their images straight out of the camera - no "trickery", no "editing magic", no "filters". This is raw, unprocessed beauty that shows them - sometimes for the first time - how truly incredible they really are.
There are only two things that I ask my clients for when they book a Session - get themselves to the studio and trust the process. I really do all of the rest. "Ms. E" was as nervous as they come when she walked through the door. She was convinced that she would be, as she put it, "my first client who didn't like any of her photographs". I, of course, knew that I was up for the challenge, and I couldn't be happier with how this gorgeous woman's transformation from nervous, self-concious and worried to finally being able to see how truly incredible that she is went.
After her Session, "Ms. E" sent me a message thanking me for her Session and letting me know that she "finally felt truly beautiful for the first time in her life", and this brought tears to my eyes. All women should feel beautiful, no matter their age, "size", shape, body type, or life circumstance. Every single woman has her own unique qualities that make her absolutely one of a kind, and that's something to celebrate!
Boudoir Sessions are absolutley transformational. I liken them to a form of therapy, because when it comes to truly opening yourself up, letting down your walls, taking a chance and accepting your own unique form of beauty, there really isn't anything better. Confidence, empowerment and a positive body image doesn't always come naturally, but it is possible - in fact, it's 100% something that every single woman should strive for. That may mean stepping outside of your comfort zone, but I promise you it's worth it.
