All the Seasons on the Central Coast
Luckily, we live in “sunny California”, where the temperatures and weather are great year-round. But what about planning a wedding? Is there a perfect time of year or one to avoid? It feels like a big decision, right – especially when you’re planning to say “I do” in a place as stunning as the Central Coast.
From sun-kissed beaches to rolling vineyards and rustic barns, San Luis Obispo County offers so much in way of natural beauty and it all changes with the seasons! Still, I’ve lived here in this little “slice of heaven” for over 15 years, and I can definitely say there isn’t a “bad time” to get married here. The “perfect time” comes down to your unique vibe. So, let’s break it down and explore the magic (and things to think about) in each SLO County season.

Spring: A Fresh Start with Flowers in Full Bloom
When to get married: March to May
Why it’s perfect:
Spring in San Luis Obispo County is like a big, beautiful breath of fresh air. The weather is mild and pleasant, with daytime temps ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s. The hills are green from the winter rains, and the wildflowers are blooming — creating a dreamy, colorful backdrop for your big day. If you’ve always envisioned exchanging vows surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant colors, spring just might be your season!
What to expect:
- Rich colored landscapes: Perfect for rustic outdoor weddings, especially in places like Montaña de Oro State Park or the fields of Paso Robles.
- Milder temperatures: Not too hot, not too cold, and the bulk of the rain has usually passed. But if you’re set on an outdoor celebration (i.e. a venue with no indoor reception space), remember that temps drop and night and it can get quite chilly.
- Floral beauty: Spring is peak season for flowers, so local florists can work with all sorts of vibrant blooms. Think tulips, daisies, and peonies — a floral lover’s dream!
Summer: Soak Up the Sun with a Beachside Bash
When to get married: June to August
Why it’s perfect:
If you love long days filled with sunshine and warm evenings, summer is your season. San Luis Obispo County has gorgeous beaches, and summer is the ideal time to take full advantage of them. Picture a beachside ceremony at
Pismo Beach or a sun-drenched reception at a stunning vineyard in
Paso Robles. Summer weddings are perfect for couples who want to bask in the glow of golden-hour sunsets and warm weather all day long.
What to expect:
- Warm weather: While temperatures can rise well into the 90’s inland, coastal areas like Avila Beach or Morro Bay provide a bit of respite from the heat.
- Outdoor celebrations: Summer’s long daylight hours mean you can have a late-afternoon ceremony followed by a lively evening reception that stretches into the night. You typically don’t have to worry about it getting “too cold” after the sun goes down, but you may want to consider the high temps during your ceremony, especially if you’re planning something in Paso Robles, Atascadero or other North County areas.
- Vibrant vineyards: Many of the area’s wineries come alive in summer, offering plenty of spaces for both indoor and outdoor celebrations. If wine and wineries are your jam, this is the perfect time of year for you.
Tip: Make sure your venue is prepared for summer heat if you're having a ceremony or reception outdoors. Keep guests cool with fans, water stations, or opt for a ceremony start time of 5pm to 6pm so your guests are sitting outside during the hottest part of the day.
Fall: A Cozy Coastal Dream
When to get married: September to November
Why it’s perfect:
If you’re a fan of cozy vibes and changing colors, fall in San Luis Obispo County is straight out of a fairytale. The temperatures cool off from the summer heat, making it a comfortable time for both outdoor and indoor weddings. If you love the rustic barn or vineyard vibe, this is the perfect time of year to say “I Do”. Think cozy, candle or fire-light, and a rich, rustic aesthetic.
What to expect:
- Vibrant foliage: Fall brings gorgeous golden hues to the vineyards and trees, creating a warm and romantic atmosphere. Ideal for couples who want that “autumn magic” in their wedding photos!
- Wine harvest: This is the time when the local wineries are busiest, so it’s perfect for a wine-themed wedding. Get your guests in the spirit with a wine tasting experience during the reception!
- Perfect temperatures: The weather cools off to comfortable mid-70s, which means no sweating through your vows, and you can enjoy a cozy reception under the stars without worrying about things getting too cold.
Tip: Fall probably the MOST popular wedding season in the area, so be sure to book your vendors and venue early to secure your spot!
Winter: Intimate, Romantic, and Magical
When to get married: December to February
Why it’s perfect:
Winter weddings in San Luis Obispo County are all about intimate gatherings, cozy vibes, and a more relaxed atmosphere. If you're envisioning a small, intimate ceremony surrounded by close family and friends, winter is a wonderful choice. The cooler temperatures make it ideal for indoor celebrations, but if you're not afraid of a little chill, you can still have a beautiful outdoor ceremony, with the landscape offering a more serene, quiet beauty in the off-season.
What to expect:
- Cozy indoor celebrations: Think fireplaces, string lights, and intimate venues. Winter is perfect for cozy indoor venues like The Cliffs Hotel & Spa or Windows on the Water in Morro Bay.
- Off-season perks: Since winter is considered the off-season in SLO County, venues often offer lower rates and while other vendors don’t usually discount, they also aren’t as quickly booked up during this time. Plus, you’ll avoid the crowds!
- Magical ambiance: There’s something enchanting about winter light and beach town fog. Imagine candles flickering in the evening, a hot cocoa bar, or even an after-party with s’mores around a fire pit.
Tip: While the weather in SLO County is generally mild, some areas can get chilly in winter, especially in the evenings. Make sure to provide blankets or warm drinks to keep guests comfortable! Also, plan for the possibility of rain!
