Your wedding day is one of the most magical and unforgettable days of your life…and guess what? Your photographer is the one person who will freeze those once-in-a-lifetime moments into stunning images you’ll cherish forever. You've probably already been pouring over Instagram or The Knot, or maybe you have 20 browser tabs open right now with different photographer's websites.  But with so many photographers out there, how do you find the perfect match? Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! Here are a few tips that will help you find the perfect wedding photographer to capture your unique wedding day vision.

How to Find and Choose the Perfect Wedding Photographer

Picture Your Perfect Photos

Before diving into the search, think about the kind of wedding photos you want. Do you love timeless, posed portraits? Or are you all about capturing raw, emotional moments? Maybe you want it all – and that is 100% possible!  Knowing your vibe will help you find a photographer who specializes in providing exactly what you want.

Experience is Everything

Wedding photography is fast-paced, unpredictable, and full of high-pressure moments. You want someone who can handle dim lighting, bustling receptions, and emotional first looks like a pro. Check their portfolio—do they have experience shooting weddings similar to yours?  Professional wedding photographers with at least 5 years of experience should know how to perfectly capture your day whether you’re tying the knot on a bright beach at midday or in a vineyard at sunset.

Are They Insured? (Hint: They Should Be!)

Here’s something many couples overlook—liability insurance. Many venues require photographers to have it, and for good reason. It protects you, the venue, and the photographer in case of accidents or mishaps. Ask if your photographer is insured. A professional will have this covered without hesitation.

Reviews Speak Volumes

A photographer’s website will show their best work, but reviews reveal what it’s like to actually work with them. Check online reviews and pay attention to the things actual couples are saying about your photographer. Were they easy to communicate with? Did they deliver the photos on time? Did they make the couple feel comfortable? Happy couples will tell you everything you need to know.

Pro-Tip: Curated reviews on websites are GREAT, but you also want to make sure your wedding photographer has reviews they don’t have control over showcasing – i.e. from Wedding Wire/The Knot or Google.

Do You Click?

Your photographer will be with you all day—literally. From getting ready to your grand exit, they’ll capture every moment. That’s why personality matters. Schedule a phone call and see if you vibe. Do they make you feel comfortable? Do they listen to your vision?  Do they offer interesting suggestions or give you things to think about you didn’t know already? A great photographer will make you feel at ease, and that comfort will shine through in your photos.

Pro -Tip:  Most wedding photographers offer Engagement Sessions either included in their wedding photography packages or as an add-on – take them up on this offer!  It will give you a chance to work with your photographer ahead of the big day!

Price is important, but it isn’t EVERYTHING

I get it, most of us are on budgets, and weddings are expensive.  It’s absolutely important to have a budget when starting your search, but don’t let “price” be the only factor in your choice.  A quick Google search will help you find way too many horror stories of couples who went with a “budget photographer” (or worse, allowed “Uncle Bob” to bring his camera to the wedding to save a few bucks) and ended up with a nightmare instead of a dream.  In this case, it pays to leave room in your wedding day budget for an amazing photographer.

What's Offered and What's Included?

You might think that wedding photography packages are pretty "standard"...but nothing could be farther from the truth!  The thing you'll probably look at first is how many hours your photographer will be at your wedding...but there's definitely more to it!  Does your photographer offer "timeline help" or a "2nd Photographer" (either included or as an add-on); how long is their turn around time (some photographers get things back in a few weeks, some take up to 6 months) and how will your recieve your images (do you get a wedding website or custom gallery?  Will your photographer provide you with a thumb drive of your images or do you have to digitally download hundreds of photographs yourself)?  Consider EVERYTHING that's in your photographer's packages.

In the End...Trust Your Gut!

Choosing the right wedding photographer is about more than just beautiful pictures—it’s about finding someone who will bring out the best in you and your big day. Take your time, do your research, and trust your gut. The perfect photographer is out there, ready to capture your love story in all of its magic.
